We recognise that everyone’s poi journey is unique, which is why every member of Poi Ākona begins at the same place — Kākano (seed). This pathway is not about comparison or achievement but about honouring each person’s growth. The classes below provide a guide to help you reflect on your progress, celebrate your development and continue strengthening your poi practice.
🌰 Kākano → the seed. Planting the seed of poi through Poi Ākona Workshop: Kākano where participants are introduced to the origins and significance of poi as well as learning how to make your own modern poi before joining in person poi classes.
🌱 Ākona → the sprout. After completing Kākano you’ll need to become a Poi Ākona member to join your first Poi Class: Ākona. In this class you learn the foundations of poi by developing confidence with single short poi while being introduced to basic movements, commands, rhythm and co-ordination.
🌿 Tipu → the growing tree. Growing and strengthening foundational skills with single short poi through continued practice, refining technique, building confidence and exploring more complex movement patterns and commands.
🌳 Pūkenga → the strong flourishing tree. Strengthening skill and capability with double short poi, developing greater coordination, consistency, confidence and proficiency through dedicated practice.
✨ Pou → a source of shelter, strength, guidance and support for others. Supporting others through poi by embodying the values of Poi Ākona, sharing knowledge, upholding tikanga (practices) and helping strengthen the community while continuing to develop with double short poi.
**Full Disclosure: Poi Ākona began with the founder's desire to deepen her own Māori poi skills and mātauranga (knowledge) while living on the lands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The teachings shared through this group reflect an ongoing journey of learning and are based on the knowledge that has been entrusted to us. We are not experts in all things Māori or Poi.
